How does a grain drying storage tower work to preserve harvested grains?

A grain drying and storage tower is a specialized structure for preserving harvested grain by removing excess moisture and maintaining optimal storage conditions. It combines the functions of drying and storage to ensure that the grain is maintained in a suitable condition over time.
Grain ingestion begins with the feeding of the newly harvested grain into the storage tower. This can be done by a receiving system, such as a conveyor belt or auger, which conveys the grain to the top of the tower.
The grain drying and storage tower has a drying chamber. Once inside the tower, the grain is evenly distributed on a perforated floor or drying bed, creating a shallow layer. Below the drying bed, there is a drying chamber or feathering chamber. This chamber contains a heating system which can utilize various heat sources such as natural gas, propane or electricity.
The core of the grain drying and storage tower is the airflow system. It consists of a fan and ductwork that circulates air through the drying chamber and drying bed. The air is drawn in from the bottom of the tower, passes through the heating system, before being forced upwards through the grain bed.

As the warm air passes through the grain bed, it absorbs moisture from the grain. This process is called evaporation or desorption. The moisture-laden air is then discharged from the top of the tower. The continuous circulation of warm air through the grain bed facilitates the removal of excess moisture.





The air flow system is equipped with a humidity control device that allows precise adjustment of temperature and humidity levels. Through monitoring, the drying process can be adjusted to achieve the desired moisture content in the grain. Different grain types and storage requirements may require specific drying conditions.

When the grain reaches the desired moisture content, the drying process stops and the airflow system adapts to reduce the temperature of the grain. The cooling of the grain prevents further moisture absorption, which contributes to maintaining the quality of the grain during storage.

After the drying and cooling process, the grain is stored in the storage section of the tower. This section may consist of multiple bins or compartments that allow segregation of different grain varieties or qualities. The storage area is designed to protect the grain from external factors such as pests, moisture and temperature fluctuations.
Modern grain drying and storage towers often contain sophisticated monitoring and management systems. These systems enable operators to remotely monitor and control the drying and storage process, ensuring optimal conditions and identifying any potential problems or deviations.
Grain drying and storage towers provide an efficient solution for preserving harvested grain. The controlled airflow and moisture management systems effectively reduce moisture levels, inhibit the growth of molds, minimize spoilage and preserve the quality of the grain during storage. A properly dried and stored grain will increase its market value, extend its shelf life and reduce the risk of post-harvest losses, which will ensure a reliable supply of high-quality grains for a variety of agricultural and commercial applications.
